Almost every tool in this category works an exchange order book. PolyBot does not, and the difference changes what the software has to get right. This page states exactly what PolyBot buys and what it leaves alone, so the comparison against a conventional bot is a fair one.
What most crypto bots trading BTC and ETH do
The established designs all take a position in the asset itself on a spot or derivatives venue. Grid bots ladder buy and sell orders across a price range and earn the spread between them. Dollar-cost-averaging bots accumulate on a schedule. Arbitrage bots hold offsetting positions across venues or between spot and perpetual futures. Market-making bots quote both sides and manage the resulting inventory.
What they share is exposure. Once filled, the bot is holding an asset or a contract whose value keeps moving, so it has to manage that inventory: stop losses, position sizing, funding payments on perpetuals, and liquidation risk if leverage is involved. Most of the operational complexity in crypto bots trading spot and futures venues is inventory management rather than signal generation.
What automated crypto trading means on a prediction market
Polymarket runs 5-minute Up/Down markets on crypto prices. Each window asks a single question: will the price be higher or lower when the window closes. You buy a contract on one side, and it settles at $1.00 if that side is correct and $0.00 if it is not.
That structure removes the inventory problem and replaces it with a different one. There is no position to manage, no funding rate, no liquidation price, and no unrealised profit and loss to watch. The maximum loss on a trade is what you paid for the contract. In exchange, the outcome is binary and arrives on a fixed schedule, so automated crypto trading here is a sequence of independent settled bets rather than a running position.
It also means the entry price is the whole thesis. A contract bought at $0.65 implies a 65% chance of that side winning, so the strategy only makes money if it is right more often than the price implies, after Polymarket's taker fee. Nothing about the position improves after entry.
What PolyBot buys, precisely
PolyBot trades those Polymarket 5-minute Up/Down contracts on four assets: BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP. It uses two fixed entry rules.
- Momentum enters early in the window when the 5, 15 and 30-minute Binance price changes all point the same direction and each one exceeds 0.2%.
- Favourite waits 90 seconds, reads the live Polymarket prices, and buys whichever side the market has already priced above $0.60.
Live trading runs from your own Polymarket wallet with USDC on Polygon, with a default per-trade cap of $10 that each account can change. Paper mode runs the same rules against a simulated balance and needs no wallet at all. Both rules are documented in the 5-minute strategies article.
What PolyBot does not do
It never holds BTC, ETH, SOL or XRP. It buys a contract that references their price and then settles. There is no spot balance, no futures position, no leverage, and no margin call. It does not connect to Binance, Coinbase or any exchange to trade: Binance price data is read as a signal input only.
It also takes no custody. Unlike hosted crypto bots trading from a pooled exchange account, PolyBot places orders from the wallet you connect, and the funds stay there. And it is not an AI product: the thresholds above are numbers a human set, not a learned model. That distinction is covered in the article on AI trading bots.
Which structure suits you
If your aim is to accumulate an asset, earn a spread, or run a delta-neutral book, a spot or perpetuals bot is the right instrument and a prediction market is the wrong one. There is nothing to accumulate and no inventory to work.
If your aim is a short-horizon directional call with a capped, known loss per trade and settlement in minutes, the binary structure fits and automated crypto trading on Polymarket is worth a look. The mechanics of those contracts are explained in the binary markets guide, and paper mode is the place to test a rule before any of your own USDC is involved.
